No. 1 | Wild Flamingos!
Did you know that behind Lignano lies the Laguna di Marano - a shallow area of sea protected from the open Adriatic by islands and sandbanks.
On its tiny islands you can spot traditional fishermen's huts called casoni with roofs made of reeds.
And wild flamingos live here too!

No. 2 | Only by Boat???
More than 120 years ago, Lignano was a wild and quiet peninsula with sand dunes and pine trees - and you could only reach it by boat!
In 1903, six boats came across the lagoon from Marano, marking the beginning of Lignano as a seaside destination.
Soon after, Angelo Marin, the mayor of Marano, built Lignano's first hotel. It opened in 1905.

The historic building is still standing in Lignano today!
No. 3 | Not always Sabbiadoro?
Did you know that Sabbiadoro means "golden sand" in Italian? But that wasn't always part of Lignano's name!
More than 90 years ago, people started calling it "Lignano with the golden sand" to tell visitors about its beautiful beach.
The name stuck - and Lignano became Lignano Sabbiadoro!
But Lignano kept growing in the 1950s, a new part called Lignano Pineta began to take shape among the pine trees. A little later Lignano Riviera developed too, close to the mouth of the Tagliamento River.
Today, Lignano has three different parts: Sabbiadoro, Pineta and Riviera - each with its own character.

even the sea has its own rhythm. The sea is always moving - even when it looks completely still?
The Moon's gravity gently pulls on the water in our oceans. As the Earth turns, the water rises and falls again. That's what we call high tide and low tide.
Here in Lignano, you can watch this happen twice every day! Two high tides and two low tides. And they aren't always the same - one can be a little higher or lower than the other.

No. 5 | A special friendship!
The famous Frecce Tricolori live very close to Lignano!
Their home is the military air base in Rivolto, not far from here. Because they train so close by, you can sometimes spot them practicing their incredible flight maneuvers above Lignano, the beach and the sea throughout the year.
And once every summer, they return for a spectacular air show above the beach, painting the sky in the colours of the Italian flag.
So keep looking up - you might just spot the Frecce Tricolori!
No. 6 | Around 600 Dolphins!
Around 570 to 680 dolphins are estimated to live in the waters of the northern Adriatic!
Most of them are bottlenose dolphins, travelling through the waters between Italy and Slovenia - sometimes surprisingly close to the coast.
So keep your eyes on the sea when you're out on a boat. You might just spot a fin!
No. 7 | A super clean beach!

The Bandiera Blu - Blue Flag is a special award for seaside places that take good care of their water, beaches and environment. The water is regularly tested to make sure it stays clean and safe for swimming.
Lignano has a very long Blue Flag story: it has received this special award for more than 35 years!

HOW MUCH CHRISTMAS FITS ON A BEACH!
In winter, Lignano turns into a Christmas wonderland. You can go ice skating, ride the Ferris wheel, enjoy Christmas treats and discover lots of festive attractions for the whole family.
And when you need a little break from all that Christmas magic, the beach is still there - perfect for a winter walk, collecting seashells and breathing in the fresh air.
